Student council and Best Buddies participated in the Special Olympics Missouri Polar Plunge at Creve Coeur Lake on Saturday, Feb. 27.
In the weeks leading up to the Polar Plunge, student council members collected donations at the junior and senior entrances, as well as in the library and cafeteria, to donate to Special Olympics Missouri. Students could put their money into different buckets to vote for which teacher they would like to participate in the Polar Plunge.
The money also allowed students to send a Crush soda to a person of their choice.
“This is our highest rated fundraiser of the year. We normally make anywhere from about $1,000 to $2,000… I’m always really proud of Webster Groves High School about the donations we get,” Spanish teacher and lead student council sponsor Lana Harter said.
Tickets for the Polar Plunge were $75 per person. The Polar Bear Strut began at 11 a.m. The theme for this year’s strut was Hollywood. Participants walked a 5k in costumes relating to the theme. The opening ceremony for the Polar Plunge began at 12:30 p.m., and the Plunge began at 1 p.m.
The winner of the vote for the teacher who would participate in the Plunge was math teacher Jacob Clark, but multiple other teachers also volunteered to participate.
“I just think that our kids at Webster have done a great job, you know, raising all this money, and I’d love to support them in any way that I could, so I’m happy to do it,” Clark said.
Multiple student council members participated in the plunge with Jacob Clark, including senior Ryan DeMargel.
“I think it’s very important for StuCo, and Best Buddies as well, to put on this event because it promotes positivity and gives kids who are less represented more of a chance to feel included,” DeMargel said.
